| Sparta is known as the "Bicycling
Capital of America", the seat of Monroe County, and is host to the west end of the
Elroy-Sparta Trail and the east end of the LaCrosse River Trail. Sparta is also the home
of the "World's Largest Bike".

Sparta has many services a biker might need including
motels, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds, bike rentals, shuttle service, canoeing,
churches, laundromats, a six-plex movie theater and an outdoor movie theater, and medical
facilities. Visit the Deke Slayton Memorial Space and Bicycle Museum while in town or head
over to Memorial Park where you will find the municipal swimming pool, ball diamonds,
tennis courts, ice rinks, hockey arena, playground, sheltered picnic area, fishing and
canoeing on Perch Lake and the LaCrosse River. Sparta also has a reputable 18 hole golf
course and a 12 lane bowling center for your enjoyment.
The Annual Butterfest celebration is held the second weekend
in June, which includes a gigantic parade, carnival, free family entertainment stage, and
plenty of food and refreshments on the grounds.
Other activities include
horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, visiting tourist attractions and gift
shops. You
will also find an abundance of antique shops in the area, and you do not have to travel
very far to get a glimpse of Amish life.
